Edit a SCORM Package Without the Source File: What's Actually Possible

SCORM Craft (Duque Consultores) 3 min read

You have a SCORM .zip that works in your LMS, but the original authoring file is gone: the designer left, the subscription ended, or the project was never shared. Can you still change it? Mostly yes, as long as you know where the safe limits are.

A published package is an output, not a project

A SCORM package is the published version of a course: HTML, JavaScript, media and an imsmanifest.xml at the root of the zip. Authoring tools convert a project into that output, and that conversion is one-way. No tool can reliably turn a published package back into the original project, so be wary of anyone promising that.

What is safe to edit

  • Text: typos, dates, product names, policy updates, and knowledge-check question titles.
  • Images: PNG, JPEG, WebP and GIF, up to 8 MB.
  • Video and audio: MP4 and WebM video, up to 120 MB. MP3, M4A, WAV and OGG audio, up to 60 MB.
  • Branding: course name, slogan, accent and dark colors, your logo, hide the original logo, and hide the author. The player language is English or Spanish.
  • Export format: SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, AICC, xAPI, cmi5 or standalone HTML (Web). The name shown in the player is the course name you set. There is no separate field for rewriting the original manifest title.

What to leave alone

  • Quiz answer choices, scoring and completion rules. The editor does not change which answer is correct or how completion is scored. Knowledge-check question wording can be updated. The answer buttons stay as published.
  • Interaction scripts. You can hide a block, but the editor does not rebuild how an interaction works.

How to do it in SCORM Craft

  1. Upload the .zip at scormcraft.app.
  2. In the preview, click the text, image, video or audio you want to change. Undo and redo are in the preview toolbar.
  3. Set the course name, slogan, accent and dark colors, and logo if you need to. You can hide the original logo and the author. The player language is English or Spanish.
  4. Choose SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, AICC, xAPI, cmi5 or standalone HTML (Web), and download (USD 19 one-time per course). Later downloads of that same course are free.

Test before you deliver

  • Run the course start to finish in a test LMS or SCORM Cloud.
  • Check completion, score and resume.
  • Check on mobile.

Who this is for, and who it is not for

For: anyone who owns or is licensed to modify a published course and needs to update it. Not for: building a new course from scratch, or modifying content you have no rights to.

FAQ

Can I edit a SCORM file without the original source?

Yes. You can edit text, replace supported images, video and audio, and update branding in the published package. SCORM Craft does this in its preview, with undo and redo.

Can I turn a SCORM package back into the original project?

No. Publishing is one-way, and no tool reliably recovers the original project.

Will editing break tracking?

Scoring and completion rules stay untouched, so the reporting behavior of those rules stays. SCORM Craft does not rewrite quiz answer choices or which answer is correct. Test the package in your LMS.

Does this work with Rise exports?

Yes, with Rise SCORM or Web exports you own.
